Intermediate Turning

We offer a variety of turning courses to suit your previous experience – none, some or lots. If you’ve got lots, maybe you can come and teach us. If you’ve already got some then maybe this course will help you develop further.

PHASE 2 – BOWLS AND BOXES

  • Four planned sessions with an optional fifth for a personal choice project.
  • Cost is £35 per session including tools and materials (except timber and fittings for a personal project).
  • Maximum of 4 people per course.
  • Each session typically lasts about 3 hours.
  • Plan is one session per week – but negotiable
  • Day and time are negotiable to suit to participants.

Course Schedule:

  1. Lathe safety. Turn the outside of a side-grain bowl
  2. Hollow the bowl and finish it
  3. Roughing out a box (end grain hollowing)
  4. Make an accurate fit and finish the box
  5. Personal project (your choice)

Individual projects from Week 5.

These are the pieces produced by the participants on our very first run of this Bowls and Boxes course back in 2023. Some of the projects chosen were at the high end of the difficulty scale – the “I want to have a go” attitude we had in this group was wonderful, and has turned out to be the norm rather than the exception.

They were all really well executed projects but top marks go to Nikki for her natural edge bowl in burr elm and to Sharon for her square bowl in yew.
